I mean, if you want to let a cat outside, you should at least watch over it, right? Or sometimes it can stay in your backyard, right?

For your information for those people who don't get it, I have said i had two cats before, but they're long gone because my mom did a stupid mistake to let them permanently free forever. I do not like the fact that cats roam wherever they want killing small animal species and invading neighbors' properties.

I'm getting real good answers, and I would like to add that sometimes it comes to mind that there is always this cat out there who's been there from morning till night, and the owner allows it. I think it's ironic. Why not just lose the cat if you're not going to take care of it?

Hey Alicia...do you realize that some people just don't know the dangers of having outdoor cats--chalk it up to ignorance. Sometimes people learn ideas from other people like their parents and then think it's okay without questioning these ideals or wait for the cat to be stolen, killed, etc. to learn the lesson--if they ever can learn. I don't think they should be outdoors unless supervised maybe like on a leash since many cats owners are doing this new trend nowadays.
It doesn't do any good either when animal control laws are laxed on cats. If people had to pay taxes to keep all animals under control people who don't have animals would be putting pressure on the organizations as well as those who don't leash up--making them feel guilty since they're paying for the laws to be enforced as it's not their fault they have neighbours who don't control their animals. Perhaps this would be a great solution to stop overpopulation too since every animal would have to be (1) indoors all the time (2) controlled under supervision while outdoors. Hard to impregnate an animal either way. Maybe breeders should have to pay a fee to get a license to breed so that anyone else who doesn't have this who breeds pays a hefty fine/penalty by breaking the law.

I agree completely. Cats should never be allowed to roam freely. I have seen cats out on the street that have been declawed! How are they supposed to protect themselves?
Of course, accidents happen and sometimes indoor cats do get out but it's the people that buy cats and leave them out all the time that bother me. What if it gets hit by a car? What if it hasn't been spayed or neutered and has babies that add to the ever increasing pet population?
It just doesn't make sense to me why people do this.

Unless you keep a cat inside from birth, then it is difficult for adult cats to adjust to being indoor cats. I adopted a cat from the pound that had been a roamer and I kept him indoors for many years. At first, he kept trying to sneak out the door and sometimes would succeed and it would take us hours to get him back inside - sometimes agnozing over whether he would ever come back at all. In the end, he died one day very suddenly at the young age of 8 years. Since then, I have adopted another cat and she goes outside on her own but never roams far from our house. She is a happy 16 year old cat.

There are a couple big concerns with cats being outside alone
1) They can get hurt from fights with other animals (or worse)
2) They can get sick (FIV, etc) from other cats
3) The can get hit by cars
Those are the big ones, then you have to think about weirdos out in the neighborhood. I know some people think that it is good for the cats to get more exercise than they can in the house, though.
A lot of it is a personal decision, but get your kitty fixed if you want it to be out and up to date on all shots for starters. People will not like that part of my answer; I don't let my cats out, but some people want to. I guess the best you can do is make things as safe as you can for them if you choose to let them out.

Why do you've dogs is my first answer as you do not seem to spotlight a thanks to regulate them, chaining a dogs up for lengthy hours is cruel and not in any respect organic so I placed the blame on your shoulders and now possibly you may want to take suggestion.. how are you going to stay with the comprehend-how of having human beings shoot your dogs and why have you ever bought such diverse of them? What dogs can leap and sparkling a 7 foot fence because I have GSD's and they could'nt attempt this without help. apart from a reformatory wall finished with barbed cord have you ever tried pushing the cord into the floor, you comprehend the reinforcing cord it really is used to position cement with, I have that round 2 acres because that is lower priced and with plants it really is hidden, the tops are sharp as you comprehend and no dogs would hop over them as I have not all started to lose one dogs now to not teach 2. i might want to understand in the adventure that they are digging less than a fence yet i'm not being nasty after I say you communicate about the gun wounds as if they recommend not something, your dogs might want to fall down and die in discomfort and in a way you should be charged with forget and that i'm shocked your Vet has'nt cautioned you of this. The dogs did see a vet i'm hoping as bullet wounds get contaminated and would reason damage internally, I have the feeling this tale isn't thoroughly authentic in spite of the indisputable fact that act now or lose the dogs continuously,.

What does hurt for a cat to roam freely out side,if it is a outside cat and is a cat not a kitten what is the big deal. What is the cat going to hurt in a person back yard.If the cat has had its shots there no disease what are there to be scared of. There is no predators any more in the neighborhood to keep rats and mice in check so the cats do this they might take a bird if they can catch one.If we run all the wild animals and keep all the cat locked up then the rottens will take over then instead of a harmless cat outside in the neighborhood you will have rats and mice in your house think about it and ask your self what does a cat hurt.

In my opinion its not a good idea to let a cat outside at all. Some people find this cruel but I feel its more cruel to subject your pet to all the of dangers in the outside world. Diseases, Vicious dogs,Automobiles etc. Theres several ways you can entertain a inside cat. I have a Ragdoll and himalayan. I have inside waterfalls that entertain them. I have a fish tank that amuses them as well. They have all types of toys to play with. I dont feel like I am depriving my precious cats of anything at all.I dont see how anyone can turn their pet they claim they love so much, lose to roam and possibly get killed. I had to let my grandma watch my ragdoll once when I took a trip. She let him out and he got hurt bad. Apparently someone had kicked him in his face and broke 2 of his teeth! Needless to say I was very upset. It just goes to prove my point a cat that is kept indoors is far more safe than one that is let out to roam.

You have issues with your mom.
Deal with her and what she did to you and your kitties.
If you're looking her for someone to back you up to confront her, we haven't heard her side of the story yet.
Sometimes, a curious kitty or two will dash thru an open door and be gone in 10 seconds, without a trace, no matter how long or hard you look for them.
Sometimes, you think they'll just go out and stay in the yard and mind their own business and they fool you. They like to explore and play hide and seek.
At any rate, it's a problem between the two of you.
Deal with it.

i agree that cats should not be allowed to roam free on the streets,
I've seen to many killed by cars and had a few close calls myself where they've darted out in front of me.
if they must be outside then have them in a fenced in backyard on a harness/leash or they have kitty tunnels now to help protect them.

It's best to always keep a cat indoors if he is your pet, but there are times when a cat will seemingly perform feats of magic that allow him to escape the confines of a safe house to do what cats love to do most - roam.
