sure--you can arm yourself better that way--be ready to beat god down just in case you do see him on judgement day!

if there is no down side seems logical to me. I think to get the benefits though you actually have to want to be His friend and I say that CZ I know people who used that approach and are the types of people you are in the habit of siting as Christians who act lets say hypocritically. Many people get hypocritical, myself sometimes get unloving when someone asks a particularly twity question in a degrading way and might mention they are being a twit instead of being loving and kind, but some have lives out there that are total hypocrisy and those are thinking as you suggest or for some other reason like it's good for business, that they are believers. God want friends not lip service. Since He apparently recognizes sincerity when He sees it it would be a waste to just decide to believe for the benys. However if there is even a small part that is genuine God will work with that one and develop that small seed into a large plant whose branches support the fowl of the air.

Hi Ruler:
Pascal did that question, and I could never warm up to it. Kind of made sense, but, I do not think anyone ever changed their ideas because of it..... I mean, it is not a bad idea. It just is not, convincing...
Well, maybe it is kind of like love, in an opposite way.
Is it wise to fall in love, when there is only one right person for you? You think no, for how will you know!
You get to paralysis by analysis if you think about it. But you do (did) allow yourself to fall in love and assume that you have found the one and only. If you doubt it, you lose the love you could have. So you find love is committment, it becomes a life, it is family, it is a choice.
So is belief in God. You cannot prove he exists, nor can you disprove it. In the final analysis, either decision takes faith, not much different than love.
Take care Ruler!

But wouldn't God be pissed if you met him and you said, oh, hey, I didn't really believe in you, but...now that you're standing in front of me (or hovering, or floating in liquid, or whatever position), I totally get what people were saying!
If you truly don't believe in God, then that's your bidness. There's no proof one way or the other whether God exists, so you can't say conclusively yes or no to the question. Belief, though, is not a ruling, just a way you feel about an issue. So believe what you feel is right. But if you have doubts one way or the other, you need to do some research, maybe some meditation or something--you need to figure out all you can about an issue if you don't know what to believe. It's OK to say you don't know, but it's not OK to say God exists or not--it's illogical to make that determination with no proof.
But belief requires no proof and no logic. So do what seems right to you once you've thought it through.

Christians ask me that sometimes. Like, why not just believe in case you're wrong? That way you can get into heaven.
But believing is not saying that you believe, going to church & reading the Bible. Believing is really knowing something is true. And you can't -force- yourself to believe something. If I think about the concept of a god, I can't help but think that it's bull.

I continue to believe in Santa Claus on the chance that he might still be up there somewhere in the North Pole like he was in my childhood. I don't want to end up with a lump of coal in my stocking some Christmas morning years from now for my lack of faith.

Maybe, who knows?
You had better be sure you believe in the "right one" if you are gonna go through all that trouble. Now that would be a real stupid mistake. Kinda like picking up an expired lottery ticket, and holding it just in case the number ever hit.

I think it neither wise or foolish. Either way one would be taking a stand on someones personal belief system and a personal relationship with that belief system. To impose acceptance or rejection of that personal decision would be extremely arrogant and self absorbed with that persons own importance in other peoples lives.

God doesn't want us to believe in Him "just in case." He loves everyone equally and unconditionally. All He asks from us is to give Him a chance, get to know Him,and return the love.He is like any good earthly father, who simply wants the best for His children. His love is true and sincere, and He wants us to be true and sincere toHim in return. Is that really so much for Him to ask?
