1/. Waste water purification by the "Magnafloc" and similar systems. Search "Magnafloc".

2/. Used in coal washing/preparation plants as a heavy medium. Suspension of magnetite in water has a high specific gravity. Relatively clean coal floats on the suspension, stony coal and dirt sink. Search "Drewboy bath" . Also used in cyclone separators in such plants.

Magnetite is removed from the waste process water with a magnetic separator and recycled in both processes.

Look at the name. It is magnetic and thus can be used as a magnet. Obviously this is useful for making compasses and the like.
