I need answers, cause my stereo was stolen last night and I know the doors were locked. No broken windows, just the drivers door was unlocked when found. I hate criminals....

I used to have a neighbor - (when I lived in Michigan) who rigged a spring loaded piece of pipe with a shell of 00 Buckshot under and behind his stereo, below the dash.

Technically it isn't exactly against the law to booby trap your own car, because it is bascially "Private Property". And if you're not careful, you might end up shooting yourself.

But on a couple of occasions, as it was told to me, eventually when he got to court, it was the "would be thief's" own fault for trespassing and poking his clumsy hands under "someplace" where it had no business being in the first place.

Its one thing to be really good at forcing entry into someone's car, and disabling someones Car Alarm,... But so far theives are not trainned to lookout for unseen booby-traps for boobies who cannot see the traps.

On the one "hand" it makes for a formidable deterent. But it gets messy, both for your car and on a legal standpoint, because of the litigation that you're bound to have to deal with eventually.

In the long run, you're really better off just to make sure that your insurance covers - or that you do get insurance for - your fancy stereo. Or just don't worry about it, so it gets stolen, perfect opportunity to get a new stereo anyway.

I can understand having enough, of the b.s. but if you have the time to rig a trap and also have a good lawyer to protect your "behind" when you do get sued by the stupid thief, because his hand got blown into useless hamburger.

Think about it, it just isn't worth the hassle.

Have you thought about getting a stereo, that you can just unplug when you leave your car, that way a thief will see the empty hole and not bother with your car to begin with.

Good luck sweetie!!

If you catch and confine a burglar, then it's called a citizen's arrest. This is legal as long as you remember that no harm can befall the guilty party as long as he's in your custody and you call the police immediately upon confinement.
Some one on here suggested that you booby trap your car, don't do that, it's now considered 'intent' if you booby trap your car or home to prevent theft. Only legal thing you can do is install an alarm of some kind on your car. (And I don't mean the kind of alarm that sounds when the burglar screams because he's had some part of his body injured, either. lol).

my husband has caught people several times trying to break into his car... once he caught the thief laying half in the street with his head under the dash screwing around with things... he kept a large wooden baseball bat tucked between the seat and door and managed to reach in there and whip the bat out before the thief even knew he was there, pointed the bat in the theifs face and convinced him to sit on his hands untill the cops arrived...

get a car alarm or have a blunt weapon ready with an intimidating demeanor!

P.S. It also helps to have a sixth sense that alerts you when people are messing with your car... this has been the case almost every time with my husband...

If you carry a cell phone call 911, if not ask a passerbyer to call 911with the location and with a summary of the commission of the crime.do not violate (unfortunayely) the rights of the accused. Tell the responding officer you would like to file charges, and follow thur with all criminal court proceeding as this may assist you if you decide to file a civil suit for damaged or stolen items from your vehicle.

All you can legally do is call the police. The option of citizens arrest is possible but it could also lead to assault charges on you if you do anything to him that you shouldn't. Leave it to the cops, even if they don't accomplish anything, bc it could come back on you twice as bad.

Use a video camera or a camera to get a documentary of what is happening if you can, that will make sure something gets done. if the cops don't do anything, go to the media!

Thats odd. How did he get entry to your vehicle. My headunit was stolen but they broke the smallest back window and gained entry through opening backdoor. You should of called the police and maybe they can get fingerprints.

What you should do in the first place, call the police. It's their job to apprehend criminals.

I understand your anger, I've had my truck broken into on numerous occasions. The police are better equiped and trained to handle these situations.
