We do not automatically become one in spirit just because the minister has made the pronouncement, "You are now husband and wife." Rather, we start a long process of becoming one--if we can truly be one in our hearts and minds. And marriage is a relationship in which we not only become one with our partner, but also one within ourselves.

This is the reason sex should just be for marriage. When you have intercourse, you literally become one! The extra rib that Adam and all men have is the missing rib women don't have until Adam or a man puts the extra bone that God gave him symbolically a rib, but literally a hardened penis which pentetrates the woman literally entering her body to make the two joined as one, you see. Over the years, you begin to look alike think alike, etc if it is a successful marriage, but it comes from the joining of bodies and minds to become one.

It's not like you're joining the Borg and have no life for yourself. It just means that you need to be interdependent with someone, and work for the benefit of both of you. I can run off to Europe for a week, but how will that be good for my family? Does that support our goals, or is it just satisfying my needs at the moment?
You just have to think beyond yourself, that's basically what the statement means.

You become "one couple" united together
Like the unity candle mentioned above, a sand ceremony is a good example. Each of you has your own vase filled with its own colour sand. As you pour them together into the larger case, you see how the two colours blend together while retaining their own colour. The larger candle is like your relationship...two parts made into one.

it means that two people need to think and work as one mind. Some people have a ceremony during a wedding where they have two lit candles and a center candle not lit. Then they each take a candle and light the center candle and blow out the candles that they lit the big one with. symbolyzing they are one.
Then some leave the two candles lit to symbolize that although they are one, they are still who they are.
