Hep A: this is the oral-fecal kind-treatment is for symptoms only- usually no permanent liver damage
Hep B: this is the one that you can get the vaccine for. I had the vaccine because I am a nurse. All of my children got it at age 15-16 because anyone who could ever be sexually active should have it. This is the one that can cause liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, chronic hepatitis, etc. The higher risk people for those complications are the elderly, diabetics, those with other cancers or some other severe illness which requires surgery or blood transfusions.
Hep c:Similar to Hep b in the complications and transmission
The complications for b and c are listed above. When liver function is affected, hepatic encephalopathy and coma can result. Frequent checks of liver function are recommended. Rest, adequate hydration and good nutrition help to avoid complications. Hope this helps!

A) Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A can affect anyone. In the United States, hepatitis A can occur in situations ranging from isolated cases of disease to widespread epidemics. Good personal hygiene and proper sanitation can help prevent hepatitis A. Vaccines are also available for long-term prevention of hepatitis A virus infection in persons 12 months of age and older. Immune globulin is available for short-term prevention of hepatitis A virus infection in individuals of all ages.

B) Hepatitis B is a serious disease caused by a virus that attacks the liver. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. Hepatitis B vaccine is available for all age groups to prevent hepatitis B virus infection.

C) Hepatitis C is a disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). You may be at risk for hepatitis C and should contact your medical care provider for a blood test if you:

* were notified that you received blood from a donor who later tested positive for hepatitis C.
* have ever injected illegal drugs, even if you experimented a few times many years ago
* received a blood transfusion or solid organ transplant before July, 1992
* were a recipient of clotting factor(s) made before 1987
* have ever been on long-term kidney dialysis
* have evidence of liver disease (e.g., persistently abnormal ALT levels)

All forms of hepatitis affect the liver. When a hepatitis infection becomes chronic, extensive liver damage might be done.

The liver is a special part of our body. It filters all substances, foods and drinks that enter our body. So, a functioning liver is necessary for life, you cannot live without your liver.

Extensive damage done to the liver through a long time might lead to cirrhosis of the liver and to liver cancer. Cirrhosis is an extensive disorder of the liver structure; it can also be cause by excessive alcohol use. Liver cancer is a very dangerous form of cancer.

If treatment does not work, then a person might need a liver transplant. This is very expensive and complex process. Also, persons who might require a liver transplant will need to go in a waiting list of thousands to find a matching donor. A matching donor is someone who might have died and donated his/her organs to others.

Chronic hepatitis B or C can often lead to more serious health problems. Because the virus primarily affects the liver, people with chronic hepatitis B or C are at risk for:

chronic liver disease
cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
cancer of the liver (in rare cases)

Do your trips to market with a list and a time limit; that way, you're unlikely to stray into the highly processed foods section.
