Kids are doing everything young now and days. You read about these babies having babies and these kids getting abducted and so forth. If your daughter is a home body she can wait for a phone but if your daughter likes going to the mall with her friends, or spending the night at friends houses even if she is 9 if you feel that shes a responsible 9 yr old let her have a phone mom but set alot of strict rules. Rules like if i call you call you better answer, or dont run up my bill you wait till free nights and weekends kick in and things like that. If your child has the mind frame of a 9 yr old and you dont feel shes ready then i understand but look at both good and bad.

Let her have the nicer of the two phones. If you are like me as long as you can make and recieve calls you're happy. Dont throw good money after bad, Your daughter does bear some of the responsibility. She should not be rewarded with a brand new phone when her last grew legs. Maybe a little harsh, but realistic. I would have her power off her phone and keep it in her bag with her at all times instead of leaving it in her shared locker. You can never trust the locker mate again.

9 yr is too young but the firefly can ONLY be programmed with certain numbers, so if you have a wandering child( I was I loved to just walk around) it probably would not hurt but I think some of these 12 14 yr are too young also. They are always trying to act more grown up why should we parents allow it.???

I personally think 9 is young for a cell phone. Mine got them when they started dating/going off with friends. At 9 your daughter will probably not be off alone anyway, so I see no reason to have one.if we give them everything when they are so young, what will be left to get when they are older? But I do appreciate the "everybody has one"..it is a favorite phrase for kids to add the guilt to any situation...

I AGREE WITH YOU! I think that when a child gets to driving age, then maybe. If they get a job and pay their share. Otherwise, anywhere a 9 year old goes there should be an adult with them. Like a friend's house... they have a phone if they need ya.

Honestly, I'm 13 and I have a cell phone, but I rarely use it. My parents almost got me a Firefly. Firefly are really for kids under 13, so I defenitally think you should get her one. They have a mom and dad button, and you control EVERYTHING! Get it. lol I know these things!

9...ok im 14 and i even think its redicuous seeing all the kids today with cellphones your seeing 4th and 5th graders with cellphones and its rediculouos i think the appropriate age would have to be around 13 and up. What 12 and under child needs a cell phone and even the 14 and 15 yr old overuse them!

i agree completely. there is no way that a child needs a cell phone or anyone under 18 for that matter. i never had one and i came out just fine. besides, cell phones are just an easy way for parents to be absent from what their kids are really doing. they shouldn't be anywhere that you don't know of anyway.
