Personally, if you have a cat that is 12 years old and you have had a litter box all that time, then don't change it. Both my cats lived until they were 15 years old. Both died of old age illnesses. I now have a couple kittens. I'm going to keep the litter box. Just to tell you why. My other cats went outside always, never had accidents. However, as they aged, they needed to go more often and I was up during the night to let them out. In the winter, I would have to stand by the door for 10 minutes, at 2:00 a.m., to let them back in as it was too cold for them to be outside all night. The litter today, is much better, with the clumping and odor control. For your sanity and the kitty, keep the litter box.

Your kitty is a little freak for not pottying outside when she can't come inside for most of the day. I know this sounds weird, but maybe you could pee outside and teach your cat how it's done. I'm being completely serious, just so you know. I don't know what else to tell you. A litterbox outside might be a good idea too, like someone else suggested.
I have a dog that will not poop outside. He'll run around outside with my other dog(who does all of his business outside), then he'll come inside and poop on the floor! My pets are weirdos too. Don't feel bad.

I agree with answer # 4. Unless a human in your house has a serious medical condition that means there can be no litter box in the house( and usually the individual is just banned from handling the litter box) it is not a reasonable thing to ask of her. If she has started to use other places besides her box please get her checked by the vet for medical conditions that may be causing this. Then try a different style box.
Since reading answer 4 other people have voiced the same concerns. Please seek an alternative to this drastic step.

You have an interesting and unusual request. Most people with animals want to learn how to litter train their animals INdoors. To see a request for info about how to "train" an indoor cat to pee outdoors is a mite unusual.
The disadvantages of "training" your cat to pee outdoors are many and the other responses to your question have pretty much covered what they are.
Also, if you have to monitor her health, how are you going to check her urine if she pees outdoors? How would you know, for another example, if she has a parasite in her poop if she poops outside? Since your cat is now a senior citizen, at 12 years of age, you are going to have to pay more attention to her bowel
movements anyway.
You'll just confuse her if you insist on making her defecate outdoors, so why would you want to do that? That's just mean, in my opinion. Hey, I'm a human and I'm confused about why you would want to do this!
Keep her indoors. It's MUCH safer for your kitty.
Please give her a hug for me.

It shouldn't be too hard but you have to ask yourself if you are doing it for selfish reasons. A shock like moving an indoor cat to outdoors after 12 years could drastically effect the pets health and shorten its lifespan. Moving an indoor cat outside is like putting a nomatic tribesman in the center of new york city. You have to ask youself would you like that done to you?

Usually the cat does this on its own once it is allowed outside. He will still use the litter box when he is inside and can't get out, but most cats have a preference for the outdoor toilet (and keeping their box clean).

If the cat has been living inside for 12 years, it would be pretty cruel in my opinion to put it outside.

Forget about it, they either use the litter box, or they go outside. It is hard to train them to do the opposit. I have one that goes outside only, and one that goes inside only.
