Typically everyone will tell you R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and this does generally work depending upon how compliant you are. That being said, if you really want to get better fast then try this. Obtain 2 containers that are at least 12-14 inches deep and that your foot can rest on the bottom without being cramped in. Fill one container 2/3 deep with water that is 100° F (hot tub hot) and the other container with water that is 50° F (cold but not freezing). Place your foot first in the cold water for 5 minutes then in the hot water for 4 minutes then back in the cold water for 3 minutes then into the hot water again for 2 minutes and lastly back into the cold water for 1 minute. This is called contrast bath and is performed daily for many patients by physical therapist and athletic trainers across the country each day. Each therapist may do it slightly differently with their patients but this will work wonders. It only takes 15 minutes and you should do it 1-2 times per day. If you perform this about an hour before bed and then elevate the leg for the next 30 minutes you should fall to sleep practically pain free depending upon the extent of the injury and it wouldn't hurt to take an over the counter antiinflammatory such as Alleve, as directed on the bottle, each day. The contrast bath technique should have the swelling and you pain under control within a few days at most. In the mean time, you should make an appointment to see your family doctor and ask for a referral to therapy as now that you have sprained the ankle, the ankle is weak and you will be more likely to sprain it again in the future without appropriate training techniques.

The first treatment is to apply ice if it is a new injury. This is done to prevent swelling. Use the ice pack for about 30 minutes. Then take something like ibuprofen or Tylenol. Take one every 4 hours. Then wrap your ankle with a heat pad. Keep your foot propped up on a pillow as high as you can prop it. If you know that it is just sprained, that is the best treatment. If you are not sure, you may want to go to an emergency care clinic and get an x-ray.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?
