I agree with the other answers that you share the same characteristics as your father.
However, I think it can also be used as a sort of get out clause as in "I wish I didn't keep doing so and so but I really can't help myself, I am my father's son" ie it's in the genes, I can't/won't/don't want to be bothered to change.

When someone says I am my father s son it means that he is very similar to his father in all aspects of himself ... almost like a repeat of history, a good copy of the original.

it means that you normally do things in the way that you're father would have done or wanted you to have done. It can also be used in the sense of loyalty or honour in that you are therefore alike to your father who is a man of courage and honour etc.

My father and I are very much alike in our physical appearance, our mannerisms, our thoughts/ideas, the way we choose to live our lives, etc.
