I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath before and had some people that liked us there, didn't care and didn't like us there. IF you do or don't, why?

I don't like the US being stationed in any foreign nation. It's a threat to any nation's sovereignty

Mostly no problem, but with some very unsavory exceptions.

A couple of drunken airmen in something like an F350 ran over three lads in a VW bug and killed them. The US used their special legal exemptions to ship them back to the US before the UK police could get hold of them. An advantage of working at Chicksands AFB which was an ELINT base.

Then there was the A10 pilots from Alconbury who shot up two British Warrior APCs in Gulf War I and did it again in Gulf War II. But by that time they were based out of the US. In war stuff happens and that's just the way it is. But attempting to evade the truth and then returning to the US instead of the UK is cowardly.

Other than that, 99.99% of the folks we met were fine. Not the loud and arrogant types we often saw as tourists. We used to go to Chicksands for the 4th of July every year and the folks couldn't have been nicer.

My aunt was the mayor of Otley and had a lot to do with the folks at Menwith Hill. Again, no issues. Twenty years on they are still very good friends with some of the families they met then.

So personally we got on well with the forces and their families. But when we met them officially the arrogance of the US military was extremely irritating.

So for myself I'd be more than happy to see the US military gone from Britain, but just as happy to see the people stay.

I think that a lot of Brits don't like American's on their turf because they see the 'Yanks' as being loud, show offs and obnoxious. It is left over from WW2 when American's were stationed in England and the British men were put out especially when the American's 'took their women'
Personally, I prefer American men to English men. In my experience they treat women better because American women have higher expectations of their men than British women do. I should know as I married a 'yank' who came to england and stole me ;-)

The U.K is one of Americas best Allies, if not the best, and if that means that American bases are based here in U.K then so be it. American soldiers spend a lot of money in our shops, clubs ect and so it must be good for U.K
