Hi,
Panting in Dogs can be caused by numerous things. The major things that you need to rule out are Heart Problems and Breathing problems.
Panting can be a sign your Dog has a Heart problem or that he is having trouble breathing when laying down. Breathing problems when laying down can be a indication of lung infections and fluid build up on the Lungs.
In some Dogs, panting can also be a sign of pain. Check your Dog over thoroughly and see if he yelps when you press his tummy, ears and when you gently move his legs. Also check his paws for anything stuck there.
If your Dog has been coughing then this is another indication of Heart or Lung problems.
But the most important thing you need to do is as follows:
1) Do NOT give your Dog any medication at all. Especially Human medication, including Asprin and Benadryl incase he is allergic to this. Dogs are like us and can be allergic to numerous things including medications and daily allergies.
2) Make sure he is comfortable and in a warm room.
3) Open the windows in the room so this will ventilate the room and help him to breathe better.
4) Make a appointment with your Vet first thing in the morning or on Moday for a thorough examination to rule out any Heart and Lung problems.
5) If your Dog is overweight this can cause panting while laying down. But once again, obese Dogs are prone to Heart, Lung and breathing problems because the fat underneath their skin is pressing against these areas.
6) Ask the Vet to check his Tracheya to make sure this isn't narrowed. Narrowing of the tracheya is common in certain breeds of Dog and also in obses/overweight Dogs.
Take care and I hope this has helped you. Good luck at the Vet x

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aUMT2
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

Sounds like he might be old. I know a dog pants when he's in pain. Maybe it's a little bit of both. I would give the pooch a 1/2 baby aspirin a day and see if it makes a difference at night.

WHAT KIND OF DOG? AND IS HE OVER WEIGHT? MY JAKE IS A BURNESE LAB X AND WEIGHS ABOUT 140 LBS. HE WAS SERIOUSLY OVER WEIGHT. SINCE HE'S LOST A FEW POUNDS, HIS PANTING HAS LESSENED. OTHERWISE, I WOULD RECOMMEND TALKING TO YOUR VET. I HAVE TO WONDER ABOUT A HEART MURMER.
