Start with Rev. 22:18-21
Then go to the book of Jude (book before Revelation).
After that book, continue each book until you get to Matthew.
It's awesome and very revealing.

There's no wrong way to do it. Some read a chapter every night, some read a verse and write their thoughts on it for a while, some go to the topical guide a pick a topic and look up all the scriptures on that. Maybe the topical guide search would be good for a new member like you.

But really, it doesn't matter, what matters most is that you maintain the habit of reading.

Congrats and best wishes

Hi, I am glad you decided to join the Church!
I believe a very important thing to do when you first join is to get good habits of: reading the scriptures every day, praying every day, and going to Church every week.

As far as reading the scriptures I would suggest that you get a timer - and read for a set amount of time each day (I would suggest 30 minutes, but for sure at least 10 min. if you can). Also you might like to have a reading light.

Usually my object in reading the scriptures is to help me feel the Spirit...I have found that the Book of Mormon is the best book to read for me to feel the Spirit.

Beware that the adversary will not want you to develop good habits in these things, so he will fight against it....but keep striving and establish them!!!
(We create our habits, then our habits create us!)
the scriptures are a true rod of iron and they will keep you on the right path if read them every day!

As far as the temple, ask people lots of questions before you go. If you like to read - a good book is "The Holy Temple" by Boyd K. Packer it is very thorough I thought, and it gave me very good insights into what kinds of things happen there.
And after you go the first time - Don't get overwhelmed, just be determined to go back often...that is how you will get comfortable with it and learn more about it. (Because the first time it is all so new and it seems to go by fast)

Good luck!

Hi! well... first of all I've been where you are at. I found it most helpful to pick scriptures that seemed to have meaning for me at the time. You'll eventually get to them all. As far as preparing for the Temple... that's another story. The classes you take at church will not adequately prepare you for the symbolism at the temple. I recommend you look on line for information about the rituals and symbols before you go. Many converts get a little freaked out at the Temple, so be prepared. Remember, the Temple is "sacred" not "secret." Get more information.

There are some good scripture commentaries out there if the language of the scriptures seems a little awkward to you. My favorites are W. Cleon Skousen's "Treasures from the Book of Mormon," which is now on CD for computer, or you can get them in book format, with fill-in-the-blanks. Skousen just died last January. Another good way is to get Seminary and Institute manuals and go through the scriptures with those to help fill in the cultural background. Extremely helpful. You might even consider taking an Institute class yourself. I don't know your age, but they are good for adults age 18 and up. I think they should have a temple preparation class in your ward. If not, ask them to start one.

As President Hinckley said, "We congratulate you on your recent baptism and welcome you most warmly. What a wonderful step you have taken in joining the Church! We stand ready to assist you in any way that we can."

That is so true!

I try to read everynight, of course I am not perfect. I am reading the Doctrine and Covenants right now...sometimes I also just go to the Topical Guide and pick a topic to read about. Sometimes I go through the bible or the BOM and read everything I have highlighted in red...that is fun. I learned a lot in seminary and love reading the comments by certain scriptures...there are just so many ways to read, as long as we are reading them, we are doing good. Pray about them too, before, during, after reading and they will open up to you so much more!
I just went through the temple a year ago and was sealed to my husband...what a wonderful, holy place it is. It is truly the house of the Lord and you can feel his presence there like no where else. I LOVE LOVE LOVE going to the temple - going to the 8:00 am session tomorrow infact!
Any more ?'s - contact me...and don't worry about the "rituals" in the temple, as others call them, everything there is wonderfully spiritual and rich in symbolism. If you look at everything in a symbolic way, it will make sense. Of course, we must go back again and again, you will learn more everytime you go.

For now, start with the Gospel of John and read through a couple of chapters each day. Pray that the Spirit of the Lord will give you understanding of what you read.
God won't fail those who diligently seek Him.

Don't you have a pair of teachers who visit you and a pair of elders, as well, to tell you what you need to do and give you help? I suggest that next Sunday, you bring this question to the Relief Society and ask them how they schedule their time. There are, also, excellent free study books that you can take with you - ask the bishop about them.

Do what you want. Is there a requirement for Mormonism? If not then, like I said, do what you want (or feel that you need to do). If so then maybe you need to convert to something else. Requirements suck. They prevent you from exercising individualism.

Shut your eyes, say a quick prayer, drop the book on the floor and read the first 666 words from the top of the first page it falls open at... or use the random number generator on your calculator.
