I have a HP Photosmart 945 with an 8x optical and 7x digital zoom. I am considering a Canon Rebel for a replacement and want to know what lens I would need to meet or exceed the range of the my current camera.

Firstly, you can disregard any importance in using digital zoom. The HP 945 has an optical focal length equivalent of 37mm-300mm.
So, you will need a lens with a focal length in that range or more. You might have to buy at least two lenses to achieve that, though.

I have provided you with some links that may be helpful...

Your HP has an optcal zoom of 37-300mm. If you get a digital SLR, this is the range you'll want to cover with lenses. Your HP also has 7x digital zoom, but digital zoom can be emulated by cropping pictures on your computer.
With a dRebel, you can cover the 37-300mm range with lenses that go from 23mm to 188mm. I know this sounds odd, but digital Rebels (and most other dSLR camas) have what's called a 'focal length multiplier', which effectively magnifies your lenses' stated reach.
You can cover 23-188mm with a single lens. Tamron and Sigma have 18-200mm zoom lenses. For better image quality, you could also get a combination of 2 zoom lenses to cover that reach, for example a Canon 17-85mm lens and a Canon 70-200mm lens. The possibilities are endless. It all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

digital zoom could be useful in case you have been attempting to apply the digicam as a telescope - to verify something some distance away on the show screen. now and lower back there's a 2-colour photograph - the bar exhibiting the zoom point strikes around the optical selection then crosses right into a 2d colour exhibiting the digital selection. rather everyone seems to be right in asserting you could crop pictures afterwards and get the comparable consequence as a digital zoom. one question is, will you ?

The Canon Digital Rebel has a crop factor of 1.6 over a standard 35mm SLR. So, your 50mm lens would be 50mm x 1.6 = 80mm.

This is good news for those that need big zooms to capture sports events, birds, peeping toms, etc. and bad news for those who like to work with wide angle photography.

Optical is way better, it is a normal zoom. Where the digital only multplies the image.
