I would recommend talking to your friends who cycle as well as stop in at a few bicycle stores. Odds are you plan on riding with others so it is a good ice-breaking to start talking about bike types and applications. It's great to know a few good bicycle shops in your area. Then ask yourself, what kind of terrain I plan on riding on (paved streets, dirt roads, trails, etc.) How often do I plan on riding my bike and how much can my budget afford. A good bike shop can help you with those. Then as far as women specific bikes, again talk to the bike shop, maybe take one for a test ride and see how the bike fits you. The bike fit is very important, if it doesn't feel good to you, are you really going to ride the bike. I personaly like the Trek bike line. I've riding one for the past few years (over 35,000 miles and counting) and I love it. Good luck and happy cycling. jim

Yes, if you are looking into road bikes and if you are short.
A female specific bike has a slightly shorter top tube and taller head tube to accommodate proportionally shorter torsos. The crankarms, stems and levers are all smaller, too, for greater ergonomics and comfort.
I just read in a biking magazine that the Schwinn Fastback Sport at $600 is the best buy for the price and feels more like a $1,000 bike.
Check out some of the companies websites. Fuji, Specialized, Schwinn, Cannondale, Trek, Bianchi.
If you're looking into a mountain bike........sorry. Don't know anything there.

For recreation, I would suggest a hybrid bicycle. Road bikes are great too, but they tend to be more expensive, and the posture is different.
Trek and Giant make good ones, as do other companies. I'm not sure it makes a difference to get a woman's bicycle. Some say they're heavier than men's bikes.
The best thing you can do is go to a bike shop, check them out, take them for test-rides, and see which one is the most comfortable for you.
Have fun!

There are several manufactures that make bikes for us. Specialized, Terry and Giant are a few of the manufactures that make female specific bikes. Yes it does make a difference, because we generally have shorter torsos, which mean we need a shorter top tube. I haven’t tried any of the short reach break leavers but would love to. Also, depending your hour height different size wheels.
What do you consider entry level? How much are you looking at spending?
Get your bike for a bike shop! They can fit you and generally offer free tuneups.
