Take a look at the feathers he is losing. Look at the end of the shaft . Is it normal? Meaning, does it have a smooth, whole looking appearance? Or is it jagged and frayed?
Look at the Grey "feather part"called the "barb". Are the ends of the barb smooth looking? Or do they look ripped or clipped?
This will give you an idea whether he is just molting or if he is plucking out or barbering his feathers.
If you have jagged shaft ends or ripped looking barbs, he might be plucking. If the feathers he has molted are normal in appearance, he is simply going through a molt.
But if he is looking sparse and the feathers are thin, as though new feathers are not growing back, he may have a dietary deficiency, and a blood panel is in order to discover what is lacking in his diet so it can be corrected. He will also be tested for any bacterial or fungal issues.
For instance, the ideal Calcium to Phosphorus ratio in an African Grey is 2 to 1. You can find out from a blood test what it is and an Avian Vet might prescribe supplements and a change of diet.
This will give you a better picture of what is going on with him so if there is a problem, at least you'll know what's going on.
Keep an eye on him and pay attention to those feathers. That will keep you up on what's happening so you'll know how to react if a problem pops up.
Good Luck!

molting, is when the feathers come out on their own.
if he is actually plucking them out.
than it could be several things i would say take him ti an avian vet
are you feeding him seeds or pellets?
pellets are healthiest, seeds can cause internal problems.
could be stress. if he keeps doing it and
you need other advice you can e mail me
cause i have plentyof parrots myself
so ihave some expeirience

If there are no other signs that something is wrong I would say he is molting. Generally if any animal is stressed there will me more then one sign.

absolute BEST thing for you to do is take the bird to an AVIAN Vet and get am exam....there could be mites, allergies and sure, stress is an option, birds need those yearly exams too and there's several types of viruses and bacterial infections that they and humans can catch.

after living with a grey for over 6 months, watching him, and taking care of him everyday, i would have to say that loosing a few feathers is not a big concern, if he is not drinking or eating and makes sounds throught the night when covered i would say get him looked at by your vet, other than that he sounds just fine, take care of him and teach him to call your mother -in - law a ***** like i did, it was really to teach him *****!!!!

He is depressed and bored, they need a lot of attention and interaction with their owner, play with him, let him out of his cage when you are there, and give him lots of different toys, but rotate the toys in his cage or he'll get bored.
