they did. in those days, peoples last names were simply "son of ---" or "daughter of ----"

People didn't have last names for the most part.They were identified by who they were and what they did.Like Jesus son of Joseph,today would be Joshua Josephson.Thomas the carpenter would be,yes, Tom Carpenter. A metal worker would be Smith,a barrel maker is a Cooper,etc.Peter was the son of Jonah,so he would be Pete Johnson,get it?

People didn't have last names. Normally they were referred to as their first name and who fathered them and/or where they were from.

Jesus of Nazareth, for example. And Saul of Tarsus.

Most people in those days did not have last names. They were known as "the son of..." Or so-and-so from such town...

might have been like son of Joseph

son of baker too stuff like that

in those days you were called 'son of' 'father of' etc. or the place they were from. this is still present amongst muslims.

eg. ahmed abu yusuf (ahmed the father of yusuf)
yusuf bin ahmed (yusuf the son of ahmed)
yusuf al iraqi (yusuf the iraqi)
