Current fastest is the Lynx at 249. MPH. There was a exsperimental "compound" helicopter that had 2 small jet for
thrust engine's as well as the jet engine for the rotor assembly,
that went 311 MPH by thr Bell Co. but never got out of exsperimental testing. That was in the late '60s.

According to the physics of helicopter flight, the fastest you can fly a helicopter is 250mph for aerodynamic reasons. The fastest helicopter is a Lynx, they stripped the helicopter of all unneccessary weight and thats how they set the record of 249.1mph. So, technically speaking there is only .9mph faster a helicopter can go. There you have it, the Lynx with 249.1mph

According to this: http://planenews.com/article-3563-thread-0-0.html
It is being built still, slated for end of this year. Haven't heard anything more on it. Supposed to travel at 250 knots.
According to this: http://www.aerospaceweb.org/design/helicopter/velocity.shtml
The world speed record for a helicopter is 249.10 mph (400.80 km/h). This record was set in August 1986, with a Westland Lynx from the United Kingdom flying over a 15 km course, piloted by John Egginton
