Do they really cause arthritis?

Answers to that question are as varied as they come -- as you can tell just by reading the variety of answers here.

It's difficult to say if arthritis is caused by knuckle-cracking or if they would have gotten it no matter what. Doctors don't have any proof that it's bad, but there are plenty of people who say they know otherwise. It depends on who you ask.

As for me, I crack my knuckles and I don't care (but I am pretty sure I'll be fine).

If you feel like reading more, below are three websites on whether or note knuckle-cracking is dangerous. One answers yes, another no and one more says maybe.

Im 57 now and have cracked my knuckles for over 45 years. No arthritis here but like any habit, a person will do it without concisouly knowing they are and it possibly could cause some embarrasment.

No, it does not cause arthritis. The noise that's made is actually air pockets in your joints popping. It's perfectly fine to crack your knuckles.
It's said that the myth that it causes arthritis because people were annoyed at the sound.

When you crack your knuckles, it lets pent-up air escape; that's the sound you hear. I've heard that it causes arthritis, but I don't know if it's true. Your best bet would be to ask your doctor.

No. Doctors are not sure what makes the sound but, there is no medical proof that it causes damage. They think that it's the noise from tiny air bubbles popping that get trapped in your joints as a result of activity.

They don't cause arthritis.

However, if you, like my officemate, do it every two minutes ALL DAY you greatly increase your odds of being killed by a co-worker.
