Walk him in the back yard and then clean it up..Your dog is insecure, and will only do the doo where he feels safe..
So, begin by walking his in the backyard, and then priase big time when he goes...also, use a 'cue' word, such as "go poo"..Notice when he does it, and try to take him the same time every day..Always use the same word, "Good boy! go poo"..Soon, after about 14 repetitions, your dog will be inclined to do it when you are away from home, on the cue." good boy! go poo"

I use the words, "Do your doody" and they will do it soon after I ask..Sure helps when it is bad weather!

If you don't have time or inclination to retrain, then putting down a bagful of sand will at least get him going in one area of your yard, where it is easily cleaned.. You can get a bag of sand at any garden center..

Your dog is smarter than you and your dad.
It is supposed to do its bathroom at home and not while on a walk. Do you go to the bathroom on the street??
The big problem with pet dogs is the OWNERS who walk their dogs and do not clean up the mess the dogs leave behind.
I wish the authorities would start to fine pet owners for not cleaning up the streets after their pets.
I'm sure your dad is getting mad because you do not clean the yard. Get busy and clean the mess and do it daily and then everyone will be happy even the dog...

At least hes going outside...

You could try walking him at the same time everyday and not putting him back in the yard until he goes. Praise him like crazy when he goes when you want. Maybe after a while he'll realize that you take him out of the yard to go and it wont happen anymore.

Your own backyard IS the spot your dog should be relieving himself! In order to keep your dad happy, clean up the mess every day, the same as you would have to do on the walks. The difference being, you don't have to carry the poop bag for the remainder of the walk home! Just a quick trip to your own garbage can. Much easier! :-)

Ummm...you DO intend to clean up after your dog on the walks, don't you?

Not having to carry the poop is exactly why I purposely teach my own dogs to NOT poop on walks. Walking is for exercise, training and fun, pooping is something to be done at home.

Try to fence a small area of the yard and take him out there to go potty. Try putting some cedar chips in the area. Clean up his mess at the end of every day . I use a small waste basket lined with a plastic bag (from the grocery store) and a pooper scooper (available at PetSmart) and put it out with the trash. Don't blame dad for getting upset with the poop but you need to clean up after him.

he prefers the backyard so you hae to find a way to cut out the backyard time. make him beg to go out, then take him on the walk. He just prefers one bathroom over another.

It's hard because whomever potty trained him taught him to go outside (which is good) but bad for this situation. The best solution is to pick it up from the backyard. You need to pick it up on walks anyway so what difference does it make where you pick it up?

It's good he goes in the backyard, you just need to pick it up.
If you want him to go while on a walk, run with him a bit that helps, just make sure to pick it up.
