Well duh, of course they would be of another religion if Christianity and Judaism had never been invented. They wouldn't be atheists, since obviously they need SOME belief in SOME God in order to function.

The bible mentions many who were true worshippers before the introduction of Christianity or formal Judaism. Hebrews chapter 11 lists several, including Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Sarah. That bible list of faithful ancients concludes:

(Hebrews 11:39-12:2) All these, although they had witness borne to them through their faith, did not get the fulfillment of the promise, 40 as God foresaw something better for us, in order that they might not be made perfect apart from us. 12 So, then, because we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also put off every weight and the sin that easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 as we look intently at the Chief Agent and Perfecter of our faith, Jesus

Perhaps it demonstrates the action of the Holy Spirit that Jehovah's Witnesses adopted the name which they did. As Hebrews 12:1 explains, they are simply the latest among that 'great cloud of witnesses' who work to serve the Almighty.

People who believed in God (the father the christian god or father of Jesus) before the time of Jesus were Jews. Muslims also belived in the same God. both of these were around back before Jesus was born. Other people believed in roman gods like zues, hara, apollo. Also hinduism existed back then and they have thousands of gods. Shinto a Japenese religion based on elements and spirits also existed back then. Vodoo the primary religion of africa was around back then. There were also pegans that worshiped all sorts of things. I dont think though that there were to many people back then that did not worship anything.

Some form of religion was practised by prehistoric man, even the neanderthals. Evidence of this is given in the archaeological digs by how the body was positioned and the articles buried with the body. The first, full-blown religion would have been that of early Sumer. Most early religions had to do with fertility cults.
