yes, not blindness, but DIABETES can result from sugar given to dogs...

and No, dogs do ' have' insulin - as a matter of fact, most of the research on diabetes treatment was actually done on dogs. :)

xylitol, an artificial sweetener, can -kill- a dog very quickly;

! Never ! give any dog any food containing xylitol!

i myself don't give dogs any sugars or any artificial sweeteners, either; they can get 'addicted' to sweets, and fat dogs die young!, and have joint, health and heart trouble, too. :(

Energy + nutrient are = to body-size ie Yorkie energy needs are 115 Kcal as opposed Irish w/hound needs 4028 Kcals per day. Only natural fats + sugar (canned food or FRESH food) are alright but, candies, sugar I would advise NOT. Depending on size of the dog will have fill,

Sugar-free candies and treats may
be harmful to pets
Like us, our dogs love sweets. Many a pet owner might consider giving a
sweet treat to their dogs but are concerned about added calories, especially
in the under-active or over weight dog. While your dog may greatly appreciate
the added treat, many sugar-free no fat candies contain Xylitol, a dangerous
sweetener to your pet.

Please people feed your pets only pet food. By doing this they will not acquire bad behaviors like begging at the table and getting into the trash. Commercial dog and cat foods are made with all the nutrients they need. If you want to give them a treat give them a commercially made one, and not while you are sitting at the table.

Sugar is not good for dogs, but it is NOT like chocolate and won't kill your dog. She may throw up or get diarrhea, so watch for that - and be careful she doesn't get any more.
