Almost every biological process in the body uses water in some way or another and a majority of the body is water around 70%. Drink an 8 ounce glass eight times a day. Or just keep drinking until your urine is nearly clear, then you know you have plenty of water in your system.

You need it for all operations in your body. Dehydration: BAD.

A military guide is 1 liter or quart per hour. 2 per hour for heavy activity. If you pee clear, you are ok. The darker the yellow, the more you should drink.

Dehydration can cause fatigue, muscle and head aches, cramps, constipation. Severe cases, you can have heat stroke and die.
