We are looking for an exterior stucco contractor in the GTA area. We have a 1960's bungalow and would like to update the insulation as well as the look, but I don't know much about the way exterior stucco works, what warranties are normal, what should be included and what I can expect to pay separately for, etc. Any suggestions?

Ask to see their license and insurance. Ask for references. Be sure to get everything in writing and read the contract carefully.

Ask them to explain their method of application. While it might not differ greatly from one contractor to the next, listening to their explanation will give you great insight into their organization and intelligence, which could be a big factor.

Most states require business to have a license, this goes for contractors also. Every state has a Contractor Licensing Board; look it up and ask about the contractor. They will let you know how long they have been in business and if they have ever had any claims against them.

Ask for references. Then you can ask the people you call (if they're willing to share the information) about the process.
