Like most cats without a pedigree, he's likely a mixed breed. Depending on the length of his fur, he's called a domestic short/medium/long hair, or, in England, a "moggie". The black and white fur is very common for such cats.
Unlike with dogs, mixed-breed cats are a very large percentage of the total cat population.
Most mixed cats don't have any purebred ancestry; but it is possible that he has some sort of purebred in his family tree. If it's more than a generation or two back, it's probably impossible to tell.
The best indicators of purebred ancestry in a cat are any features that most mixed-breeds don't have--features that may come from purebred cats which are bred for those things.
This is the cat fanciers' association web site:
http://www.cfainc.org/breeds.html
Halfway down the page is a link to a "breed slideshow". This should open as a pop-up and display examples of the typical "look" of each breed. (The link to the next picture is on the lower right hand part of the window--I had trouble finding it.)
Check for fur configuration and color, body shape and size, face shape, tail length, etc. and try to see if any of that matches your kitten. Anything that is unique to a breed of cat and also to your kitten may indicate that he has some genetics from that breed.
Check for personality characteristics as well... Some cats are very laid-back, some are very social, some very vocal, some very curious. Some breeds are bred for personality as well as physical appearance--Siamese, Persian, Maine Coon, Ragdoll, etc.
You will be better able to tell what breed your kitten most looks like when he is an adult and has his permanent body shape and adult fur (some breeds have distinctive "kitten fuzz" stages, as do many mixed-breed cats).
Mind you, this method isn't foolproof; the genes in purebred cats do pop up in the moggie population quite a lot--that's where the purebreds, or most of them, came from in the first place, anyway. So any guess you make is really just a guess--you may be right, you may not. But it is a fun game to play, isn't it?

That's NOT an American Shorthair - it's a DOMESTIC shorthair - a cat of no particular breed. Did you buy your kitten from a breeder and get papers for her? No, you didn't. Which means this kitten isn't any breed at all. It's a "domestic" just like over 97% of the cats on this entire planet. What do you mean you "think" it's a he? Why haven't you taken it to the vet to be checked out and get it's first set of shots???

Here's what my vet told me. I had a kitten with similar traits. But the thing that told him that she was a Himalayan mix was the fact that she had short legs, long body, flat face (similar to a Persian but not as squashed), long hair and the kicker was the black nose and black pads on her feet. Ask your vet, they are able to tell much more than a normal person.
Your new family member sounds beautiful!

Does not sound like a specific breed - sorry. Cats tend to interbreed if left alone. Each kitten in the litter can even have different 'dads'. He sounds cute though!!

He sounds like a mixed breed domestic shorthair (unless he has long hair, in which case he's a domestic longhair). Enjoy!
