Although there are many opportunities in these areas, I will only highlight two, since I have experience in those areas. The first is a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (aka-Medical Technologist). These are the people who generally work in hospital labs, performing the various tests on body fluids that doctors order.

Med techs can choose to work only in the area of Microbiology in the lab. They culture patient samples and identify any organisms that may grow from those samples. They also perform susceptibility testing on organisms to help let the doctor know which drugs would work best to treat the patient. (Med techs can also specialize in Mycology (fungi) and parasitology.)

Immunology is another area that med techs can work in. Here, they test patients' blood for antibodies in order to diagnose various (often viral) diseases.

Also, there is also a demand in the field of infectious disease epidemiology. In this area, epidemiologists try to find the cause, source, etc. of various infectious agents as well as try to find a way to prevent occurences of infectious disease.

So, that's about all I can tell you in a nutshell. I hope that helps.
