This is a very bad technical desire with no real logic. Microsoft does not support any platform that is below Windows XP Prof., SP 2. So you will not get any critical updates or support.

Plus any new installation will wipe out your 98 platform.

I am sure that you know that Microsoft uses "WGA", tool to validate your registration key for the platform. If it is not valid they will cause you alot of grief, plus you will not get any updates or be able to install IE7 or IE7 or Windows Media Player. As their tool wiil check atleast four times during the download.

Your smart move if your pc has the resources to run Windows XP Pro., or XP home. Then you will be upto date with Microsoft.

Another problem with having very old platforms, that you are going to play hell trying to find any software now that will support any of these old platforms. Especially Windows 2000.

I have used every Windows Microsoft platform they made. In my opinion Windows 2000 Sever was the very best platform that required far less critcal updates then any other platform and was very secure. The reason it was not built in Redmond, WA. where the headquarters is located. Was built for Microsoft in Australia. That is the only reason it was not junk like the rest of their platforms.

Check with a local tech, or a friend who you may have that is an expert in computers to see if your system has the resources for Wiondows XP Pro. If not your best bet is to get yourself a new pc or if the resources are good then purchase a very small item from an OEM, and they will give you Windows XP Pro., for around $100.00 or less.

If you do purchase Windows XP Pro., make sure you stay there with the tech, who performs the installation, because alot of the computer stores are criminals world wide. They will open a new box an install the platform for themselves, friend or family member. Then use equipment to reseal the box so it looks like it has never been open. And when you go to install you will find that your key is not valid.

You want to see them install SP2 and all the critical updates, because the Microsoft will perform the validation when they go to update.

You will need Windows 2000 CD with valid key to start with. Its also a good idea to make a windows start-up disk (Floppy) which you may need to load the starting drivers before going ahead to format the hard drive by using the command "fdisk". It will ask you to confirm whether you wish to proceed with all the data on your hard drive been wiped off permanently. If you are happy with it, press "Y" for yes. The format will begin. Then go to your bios setting and select first boot by CD. Insert the Windows 2000 CD in the CD rom and restart the computer. When the computer starts, you should be able to update your computer to Windows 2000 by following the on screen instructions. If you do not want this procedure, then try loading the Windows 2000 disk in CD rom, it may very well give you the option to update your current configuration without loosing your previous data. But a clean installation is always preferred for optimum performance. When your computer is up and running, simply go back to your previous settings in your bios. Good luck

Back up all important documents. If you have the 2000 disc just run it. it should ask if you want to update. say yes and keep following the direction.
