Bring a pet to school.

Then let the child tell everything he/she knows about his/her pet in10 minutes, usually the kids knows a little something about science, then the teacher will add more science information about the pet.

Example, Hamster, different kind of hamster, hamster tend to be loner and very protective to their own space, lifespan of 2 years, some up to 3 years depend on how you take care of them. Kids will love to know how to make it to 3 and so on.

Take them to a petting zoo, then when they return, have them tell you about the animals they have seen. Make a bird feeder, put it somewhere the kids can watch the birds feeding from it. Then talk to them about it, like what kinds of seeds they think the birds eat and such. Something to help them think about the things they see everyday. If the school is ok with it, then you could have a turtle in the classroom and let them help care for it. Let them make their own "zoo" by having them bring in a shoe box and letting them cut out animals from magezines and paste them to the insides of the box. You could make a poster and have a discussion of how a chicken lays an egg, then sits on it for a while and the egg hatches into a chick. Hope this helps, good luck.

starting with basics
you can ask if the children have pets at home....and see if they can bring pictures
read lots of animal books and allow the children to look at and make books about animals(try zoobooks, and old national geographic mags for art work)
ck your local zoo or wild animal facility in your area(may also try local museums)see if any of them have loaner items to use in your classroom or if they have "experts" that can visit
have children observe animals in their natural habitat if possible(insects, birds, small rodents, and others) you may need to take a walk or two to find some in the area to watch
allow your children to act out or dance the parts of different animals (ex. demonstrate how animals move-crab walk--bear walk)and then have races using those movements
also keep your eyes open when you are out doing errands you can find examples of animals and their habitats and homes in lots of places--your yard for nests(empty of course only), garage sales for stuffed models, thrift stores, etc.

one of the best animal projects i ever did was build a nest---we watched the birds build one and discussed what they were made with and how they were made and then collected items to make one and by the time we finished the children were alll amazed how much it actually took to make one(ours was about 12" accross)-

at varing times in classrooms i have worked in we have either had or had visits from every thing from a turtle, hamster, guinea pig, birds, snakes, dogs, cats, an owl, etc.

Give them a pine cone,
slather it in peanut butter,
roll it in seeds,
hang outside and watch the
birds and the critters tear them
up.
Messy and fun.
