As a non-military person, I have no idea...is it any sort of grand, romantic gesture for a former soldier to give his dogtags to a loved one to wear?

yes, dog tags are your identifier - in essence, they are you. by giving someone your dog tags you are giving them yourself.

but yeah, i guess like everything else it is different based on the individual. i have a set of my husband's navy dog tags & we have a set put aside for our son (he's in the army now).

Sometimes .Dog tags are part of the uniformand it is expected u wear it at all times. So to a lot of soldiers it is of sentimental value. As for me I hardly ever wore my dog tags cause its very uncomfortable to me.Allthough my seargent foeced me to wear it but as soon as hes not around I will take it off.Neverthe less I consider it valuable since like a lot of others my dod tags also carry a ARMY VALUES card which is very imp for me.

This is a time-honored tradition that I believe dates back to WW II. I served in the Army for 4 years and the Air Force for 3 and handed a copy of mine over to my girlfriend at the time (copy... because we were required to have them on us at all times while overseas).

my husband and i were in the navy at the same time...i never gave him my dog tags, basically because we worked at the same base and saw each other each day....

my husband gave me his dogtags before he deployed, i think its kind of a romantic thing but yet in the back of my mind, i was thinking "oh god, does this mean that he's not coming back?"
