I was accepted to every college I applied. I had the financial means to go to college right out of high school, but I chose to enlist instead. I met smarter people in the army than I did in college (after my enlistment).

He meant exactly what he said. He meant that if the American youth are too stupid to get an education then the join the military and get stuck in Iraq. I really can't see how people think that he was referring to the President when he was addressing college students. His other comments where just a pathetic attempt to try and recover from shoving his foot down his throat. So he lied and said that the Republicans made him say that. The political parties (all of them (especially the Democrats and Republicans)) do not like John Kerry because he cannot hold ground on any stance. During the Presidential elections he really embarrassed the Democrats with all of his stance jumping which ultimately lost him the election. To be honest, the Republicans didn't have to force Kerry to do anything to make him look bad, he does that himself just fine. Besides, interference like what he is talking about from any political party can get them in a world of trouble. Kerry has no credibility left to stand on, that's why the Democrats have several more candidates other than him.

He is said to have said that. He didn't say that.
He is said to have said that by desperate neo-con Republicans. There is no way a reasonable person could have heard him say any such thing.
Even if he had not "botched a joke," his comment is still valid, in that he was trying to get people to stay the course with their education, remarking that being stuck in Iraq could be one of the options for them.
As far as the military and education is concerned, I recently read on both Yahoo news and on CBS news that the Pentagon has loosened it's enlistment requirements such that a high school education is no longer needed, remarking that such a diploma is not needed for the job. A person without a high school education is not really educated.
So even if Kerry was not trying to crack a joke, he still has a point - most private sector and other government sectors want a high school diploma, and the military doesn't.
I night mention also, that there was a time, and it still goes on, when judges would tell young defendants, "It's jail or the Army." Nobody says that these judges are saying that people in the military are criminals, do they?

I have 6 nephews in the military, all have a high school diploma. One went to college and is now in communications for the Air Force. 2 of them have worked on Jet Fighter Planes as mechanics and 1 has now retired after over 20 years of service and now teaches others how to work on these planes. 4 had a chance to go to college and chose the military instead. I thank them and God every day for deciding that this country and I am worth fighting and giving their lives for.
I believe that Kerry meant EXACTLY what he said.

Na he meant exactly what he said, although he "apologized for his botched joke"...he knew he had made a mistake by saying something like this and he is now trying to play it off as a joke or as if he meant it in another way. Its impossible to misinterpret a comment like that. Kerry is so anti-Repub that he would rather trash the soldiers dying and risking their lives so he and all of us can live and have our freedom. Sad.....I do not agree at all with this comment. Alot of soldiers are very bright, I mean I am looking to go myself and I was looking at some of the requirements and for the army special forces (I believe thats what it was) you had to have a 23 on ur ACT and something like a 1050 on ur SAT. Now neither of those are genius scores but there are plenty of ppl who go to college and make it through just fine who scored well below that on their tests.
Did Kerry call himself dumb though? He was in the military.....regardless he deserves to never come out in public again and comments like these are a great reminder of why we voted Bush into office rather than this moron...

Kerry needs to go to Iraq , get down on his knobby knees and beg forgiveness .
He hates the military , votes to cut their budget , deprives them of needed equipment by his votes .
Lied before Congress , after Viet Nam .
Went to Paris and met with the N. Viet Namese .
It's Kerry who needs an education .

You have it backwards. He didn't say those who are in the military are uneducated (after all, he was in the military after getting a Yale degree).
What he was trying to get across is that those who are uneducatied are more likely to go into the military. The next point -- that didn't come across as well as it should have -- is that those in the military will likely get stuck in Iraq -- because of the policies of Bush.
In other words, the poor will pay for the mistakes of Bush.
I don't think he said it right -- but he got it right.

When I first heard it, I thought he was talking about Bush. You know how Bush is stupid and got us stuck in Iraq. And this is what he said he meant later. So to me it was a vague joke that many are misunderstanding. I like how he was calling Bush stupid, and then Bush misunderstands the joke and proves him right.
So no, I don't think military people are uneducated.

+ It is so sad when we elect a traitor into our government, and then keep re-electing him. Purple heart for a paper cut, boy they must have wanted him outta there bad.
I presently have 3 masters and 3 bachelors degrees. I guess I don't know enough yet. Please make me a Democrat so that I can go to school for free as this is financially ruin at this rate.
