I'm 48 years old and had my tonsils out 6 weeks ago. The ENT didn't want to do it because of my age. I was expecting the worst, but I didn't feel bad the first week. The second week it hurt in my ears and in my throat. Just make sure you take the medication when you are scheduled for it, and you should be fine. I also had sinus surgery at the same time. It feels great to breathe again! I wasn't sleeping at night because of my enlarged tonsils, but now I can sleep for 6 hours straight! I feel a lot better. It might hurt for a week or so, but in the end it will be worth it. If you go in with a positive attitude, it will be a lot better!

I admire your honesty about being afraid of surgery because you are putting your life in other people's hands in any surgery. I guess the tonsilectomy is making a comeback because it was very popular to perform it in the Fifties and Sixties, and as the years went by the medical community looked for alternatives as opposed to performing it so quickly unless absolutely necessary. But, I answer your question as someone who successfully had a tonsilectomy with absolutely no problems afterwards. Okay, for a few days my throat was sore and I had to eat soft food (spaghetti and ice cream and other easy-on-the-throat goodies). The years have flown by and I want to reemphasize I have had zero problems. Of course, what matters is what your doctors advise you. But you are intelligent to do your research before any surgery. Best wishes to you.

Tough question...some people are for it, I am against it...I had problems with my tonsils my whole teenage life. The doctors kept telling my mother to get them out...she said no....Today, I have no problems at all. ever. However, my niece has infections each month and has been told to take them out. She can't keep suffering like this. They say we don't need them but we do. They are a part of our immune system. Try going to a naturalpath and see what they say. I think if its really serious maybe you won't have a choice but try anything you can before they are removed. Everyone is afraid of surgery. Everyone. Young and old. Ask your doctor to go through the whole procedure with you so you know what exactly will happen. Good luck to you...:)

I had a tonsillectomy and adnoidectomy in 2000, and it was one of the best decisions my mom made for me. I suffered from tonsillitis and strep throat 3-5 times a years for 4 years. Since the surgery, I haven't gotten sick since.
Hope this makes you feel better about having the procedure done.

I had one when I was about 10. You are under anesthesia so you won't feel the actual surgery... and then when you wake up it will just feel like you have a sore throat for a couple days. You will be drinking just clear liquids pretty much during those few days. But it is well worth it!

When I was younger I got strep throat all the time.
I had a tonsillectomy when I was 13.
My throat was sore and it hurt to talk or swallow for about a week.
BUT I'm so happy I got it done because I'm not sick all the time anymore. It pays off
Plus you get to eat all the ice cream and popsicles you want!
:)

You're definitely going to have pain afterwards. But that's what popsicles are for! It really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But I had some other stuff done when they took my tonsils out so it was quite a bit worse. Good luck.

the procedure is no big deal, can even be done in the doctor's office. A day or two eating popcicles and you are back in top shape...don't be a wuss, just do it if the doctor recommends it.

It is fairly non-painful and it's well worth it if you are prone to having strep or tonsilitis.

If they hurt and are bugging you, get them taken out. If you can live with it, leave them in.
