for me but I am still required to activate Windows. I cannot. It won't accept the CD keys for the disk he used. This really ticks me off. Has anyone had a similar experience? I understand the anti piracy issue but sheesh - this makes it seem like everytime you reorganize your hard drive you are expected to re-register or something...PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN.

The problem is that Microsoft, "WGA" tool does an in-depth analysis to see if the key is legal. The flaw comes when some one give you their compuer and the program is reinstalled.
Why did your friend remove the platform if he gave you the HDD, all your friends data is on that HDD. (With the right tools/software you can strip off all the data on the HDD.
Should of just left the platform and just removed all of his programs.
The entire Microsoft WGA valiation of keys is messed up. Many people have had their system crash. And had a valid key. When they reformatted Microsoft says, "key is not valid".
LIke some of the other people have told you call Microsoft because you will never know if they will give you a new key or what they will say.
Some of the very best legal minds in the world, are unable to understand the "EULA", agreement related to reformatting, giving your pc away and reinstalling the program, etc. etc.
One thing for sure the very richest man in the world is determined to get richer at all Microsoft user expense.

If you have the key and disk, call Microsoft. This is not a unique problem and I'm aware of several people that have been given good activation keys by Microsoft support.

i hate to say this, but call microsoft. explain the situation to them and they will give you a new cd key or go ahead and get you activated.

You will have to buy another key and possibly reinstall the operating system, but it is not to hard to do....
