If God created man and free will, then surely he knew that people tell lies. How can we be sure that the information that has been passed down to us today is true? After all religion has been changed by our leaders in the past for political gain.

Should I be a Muslim, Christian or a Jew? Maybe a Buddhist or a Hindu.

If I choose the wrong religion, will I go to hell? Perhaps I ought to not believe in any religion because that way I stand a better chance of doing the right thing.

First off, many are unaware that God has literally nothing to do with religion. How odd is that, but it is the Truth. Satan is the author of all world religions, because he is the beautiful Angel of Light, Lucifer. The False Light of Darkness is the common denominator amongst all the world's religions. In the Book of Revelation religion is called the "Harlot of Fornications".

Free will caused the "Great Primordial Fall" when we (our spirits)became separated from God, called by C.S. Lewis "The Great Divorce", which created our current Universe through Chaos. We live in a fallen and degenerated system ruled by Satan, not God. Satan is the lord of this world. God is forced to be outside the system because it is in a defiled state, and God cannot inter it in His fullness, because His Presence of Purity and Holiness would kill and destroy it, for the True Light of Purity pierces the Darkness. The only way God could rectify this dilemma was to send His Son, Jesus the Christ in the flesh. He is the one and only antidote due to His Redemptive Deed upon the Cross and His Resurrection. Christ Jesus did not come to establish a religion; He came to set the captives free FROM religion, and to establish His Church. The true definition of the word "church" is "a people". It is not a religion, or a building, or an institute, or a gargantuan hierarchical organization. It is a “wall-less” church. The Church (People) of Christ has not yet been established; it is a FUTURE EVENT. This small group of people will be His “Bride”; they will be a small remnant that has not been defiled by the Harlot of Fornications. They will be Christocentric, and Christ Jesus will be their “First Love”, not the Bible, not a religion, not the Rapture, not a pastor, not a mortal spiritual leader, prophet nor guru, and not anything else.

Hence, your last statement is closer to the Truth: "Perhaps I ought to not believe in any religion because that way I stand a better chance of doing the right thing." I would entirely avoid "religion" like the plague so that you do not defile yourself with the Harlot of Fornications, including "Christian religion," for even Modern Christendom is morphing into strange divergences alien to God's precepts. However, to this abstinence I would add a "personal" seeking of the Face of God, Christ Jesus, just you and Him, and through Him you will know the Father God. And as you begin to immerse yourself in Him what will occur is a "personal relationship" where He will audibly and through dreams guide you in His Ways.

Seek Him before it is too late.

Well, throughout history, there are stories in EVERY religion of God destroying whole cities or certain numbers of people because of their sinful ways and their worshipping of false idols and other Gods.
Truth is, it was all written by men, who did not have the scientific knowledge that we have today to explain the odd happenings they were seeing. (exa...volcano blowing up causing a tsunami to wipe out an island...explained as God got angry that they were disobeying him) They knew nothing back then to help explain things so it all got blamed on God or the Gods.
Men/Women were the ones who came up with the concept of religion. We just have to choose what we feel is the right thing to believe and find peace with that; because we were not around when the Earth was made or have not been able to just sit down and have afternoon tea with God (although nobody would believe us if we did) And of course, nobody wants to believe that other religions are right when they believe something else.
Just try to find what gives you peace and live the way you think you ought to live. Blessed be and I hope you find the right path.

God really does exist sweetie, it's not Him that "allows" the religions. People decide by how they interperet His word, and some don't interperet at all, they just do what feels right to them. In the bible, Jesus didn't seem to care much for "religion", He wants us to have a personal relationship with Him and not get all tied up with a jillion rules and regulations. He said the most important commandments are to Love the Lord God with all your heart, and to love your neighbor as yourself. The rest of it should fall into place.

Are you implying that the One Creator ought to strike down the Earth and wipe out everyone?

Greed, jealousy and an absent intellect are human traits. Humans wanted more than one religion to feel comfortable in what they do with their life.

Why not? He allows us to choose. Is that cruel? Why? After all, aren't we the ones who formulated other gods rather than the One true God?
So, whose fault is it if you pick the wrong religion? God's? By no means! Because he equipped you with the ability to search God out.

Problem is people do not want to experience God.

Nice question. Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita " Whenever there is a decline in religious principals and the truth appears to be lost, I appear again and again or send my representative to reestablish the truth." Each time he comes or sends someone it is truth then man changes things for his own idea and the truth becomes lost. So God has to send another son.. Christ said their where many before me and there will be many after me. You have to understand this to see Gods all loving Merciful nature. God allows them because humans allow them, God won't push His will on to anybody, He won't make anyone follow Him and He will let you disobey His commands to not worship other gods.

The other religions are here because man wants to do everything on their own.
Without the help of a truly loving God.

For the same reason there are so many different kinds of people.

God LOVES diversity!

Have you ever considered that the multiple religions of this world are a test?

The greatest commandment of all is love. Are we really loving our neighbor? Or are we busy badmouthing them and insisting that they see everything our way?

Loving someone doesn't mean you have to agree with them. You can always agree to disagree.

Excellent question!

He wanted us to. He knew this would happen (because of his omniscient mind) when he gave us free will, and he didn't mind. He didn't care that millions of people will die from religious warfare, he didn't care that lots of hatred would spawn, just as long as we could be blamed for killing others without God having the burden of blame. He should be ashamed of himself.
