Be sure to buy from a dealer in your area. They carry better quality machines, and are able to do repairs for you. If you're having trouble with something, they can answer your questions and sometimes correct the problem without any cost. Some even offer classes for your particular machine. If you were to buy a machine from Wal-Mart or even Jo-Ann Fabrics, don't expect to be able to go back and ask questions. They just sell the machine, they don't provide customer support.
You can still get good quality machines for under $150 - several of the big names have come out with "beginner" machines in the last couple of years. Look for Bernina, Pfaff, Janome, Brother, Husqvarna Viking, or Elna. These are all well known, well supported brands. Check your yellow pages for sewing machine dealers.

right now , hancock fabrics(if one in your area) has a Janome for 90 bucks. it's regular price is 120. your best bet though, is to go to a sewing/vacuum shop that has been there for awhile, and get a refurbished one. this way, they show you how to work it, fix it in shop. if you get one from sears or some place like that, it will have to be sent away for warrany work. right now in my area sewing/vac shop, they have a Janome Jem, for 199.00. it weighs 12 pounds and is one sturdy little machine. for a first machine, it is great...i travel with mine, 5th wheel, and use it for classes. kick in the extra cash yourself, and get that. i quilt, and i have a big janome. so i am partial to them.! email me, i think you can do that from my profile, when you get a machine, and i will hook you up with some really greta sites for sewing on line...Kim
