The 'merienda' is the dinner, not a snack. At least in Mexico, I'm mexican.
Young people don't use this word very often..it's kind of old, we just say 'cena' that means dinner as well.

Depends on the region, but is a meal ingested in the evening.

In some parts it is dinner (but it must be light, not a full meal like dinner in anglo-saxon cultures).

In other parts, it is something like a second breakfast, being breakfast something very light at dawn, "merienda" would be something substantial somewhere around mid day. (South of Mexico uses it this way sometimes).

Hope this helps.

The word may be 'Merienda' meaning 'tea'. It can be used as an irregular verb, meaning 'to have tea'. To have a snack is a good colloquial explanation.

it's the afternoon snack...

for example my grandma in Mexico is oldfashioned,
she prepares...

early in the morning, breakfast (milk, coffee, toast, pancakes, crereal, etc)

around 10:30-11am, lunch (sandwich, chicken salad, etc)

around 2pm a very complete meal (soup/ rice, salad, meat/chicken/fish, dessert)

around 5pm comes the "merienda", for her would be coffee & milk with sweet bread, fruit, etc but it could be any snack.

at night the dinner ( something not that heavy).

i hope this will helpful
