Copal is a resin, extracted from Bursera (a plant) that the aztecs (and other cultures) used it in their rituals. It is a lot like incense, fragrant when burned, but unlike incense it cannot burn alone, so it is often burned over coal in little clay (or tin) stoves (known as brazeros).

It is very often found during this season in offerings (ofrendas) for the dearly departed.
