TVs have three colors...red, green and blue. If you're seeing purple, which is a combination of red and blue, then you're green is missing. There are a lot of possible reasons for this. If it's an old TV you might be able to adjust it. If not, you'll have to take it in. You probably won't need a new picture tube...unless it's a Sony. Sony TV's have a separate "gun" for each of the three colors while other TV's acheive the colors by electronic circuitry. If the picture is still good (aside from the color problem) it's probably worth getting fixed. TV tubes made these days don't last long compared to those made even ten years ago.
Some have suggested speakers and their magnets. Magnets curve the electrons that hit the front of the TV screen and make the picture. But this would effect all colors...not just one or two. The one exception would be if it's a Sony...as the guns are separate.

Well just amke sure you dont have anythiong like speakers standing next to the television as the magnetic bit on the speaker might well cause a weird colour effect.
Also if this problem persists it might well be that the tube of the television is faulty.

One possible answer.
Have you got any magnetic source sat next to it such as speakers?
Move them, you might need to get it degaused by an engineer if it stays like that.

Either your tube is going, or you have something magnetic nearby or on top of your tv such as hifi speakers.

I had this and i realised that i had my speakers on the top of the telly. Its the magnets in the speakers that can cause this effect.
