If you assume that Kerry wasn't talking about Bush in his comment
isn't there some truth to Kerry's comment at face value. If you asked most parents whether they would want there kids to go to Harvard or the Army the answer is going to be Harvard. Of course it doesn't mean a person is stupid if he/she is in the military but in reality it is often the best available option they have. Anyone who has spent time as an enlisted member of the service should realize that a portion the service members are not academic types. That the military was their way out and they had limited success in high school. I'm not talking in absolues but a large %. This is more like reaction to a truth people don't want to admit. If you are shining academic star chances are the military is not the best option.
In Micheal Moore's movie the same congressmen who would never dream of letting their children join the military are the ones trying to blow out of proportion Kerry's comments.

You all are missing my point or maybe I expressed it poorly. I myself am a veteran of the first gulf war as an enlisted soldier. The way I heard it Kerry trying to state that the first option for most people should be to focus on education and education is the goal for most families. Obviously officers are educated but that is an entirely different career than being an enlisted soldier.

Its kind of messed up anyway how people will express moral outrage over words of a politician but the streets are filled with homeless veterans with no hope. The movie Flags of our Fathers shows what is a reality. Hero today forgotten tomorrow.

I don't deny that there are people in the military who had no interest in going to college. There are plenty who probably would have never made it to college.

But that's not what Kerry's "joke" implied. It implied that the people who didn't study, who didn't try to be smart, are the ones who get "stuck" in the military as their last option.

That's insulting and untrue. There are plenty of people in the military who are quite well educated. There are plenty of people who will go on to finish school after their service in the military. In many families, it is expected that the son or daughter will continue the family legacy of service before moving on to success in the civilian world.

For many of the "academic shining starts", military service IS a great option. Some of us joined because we felt the call to serve our country. It had no bearing on whether or not it was the most lucrative choice at the time. But according to Kerry, I guess we were just too lazy in high school and had no other option.

Since your fiance is a stay at home dad then do your son a favor and go in the military. You will get an education and come out with marketable skills. Your son deserves a better future than the one he is headed for. Once you have completed a couple of years in the service you will be able to take your family with you (if you are married). Then you will be making enough money to hire a care taker for you son and your husband can go to school and learn a trade so he too can work at giving your son a future. The two of you need to decide what kind of future you want and then start working toward that. Don't just assume you can't do it. You can but it takes work and sacrifice and hardship but it will have a great reward.

A very large number of people in the military has some college.

Micheal moore is an ***. He took soldier's comments out of context and last I heard is being sued by that soldier.

So go ahead and listen to moore and kerry. Those that speak that way about the military and use their words just to twist for their own purposes are sick people that I will not listen to.

The high school students that do not have a good study ethic, or a good work ethic, but seem to go through school with the attitude that the world owes them a living, are the ones that will have the choice of either getting a job where they meet interesting people and ask "Do you want fries with that?" or go into the military. When the military standards for entrance are so high that these losers can't even get in, then the welfare ranks will explode, because these lazy kids can't or won't hold a job.

Actually, my 5 year old daughter wants to follow in her Grandfather's footsteps and go to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. She already knows that to do so, she will need excellent grades as well as dedication, discipline and courage.

My husband and I will be incredibly proud of her. Our nephew graduated from VMI and did his tour in Iraq. He and his classmates are intelligent and brave, and we all owe them a debt of gratitude.

Get a grip and stop making such insulting generalizations about our troops.

I never thought the first option for young people was to join the military. What makes you say that?
