its cheap, easy to use, and people get suckered in to using it because that's what most programs run on.

XP is lame - it only has one desktop. In Linux I have 16 (yes sixteen!) desktops, bullet-proof security without the need for any security software apart from a firewall, and a COOL interface. Linux rocks - try Linux Mandriva - you'll love it!
Plus Linux is free or very cheap ($20-$30), and the licence lasts forever. In the future, if you call Microsoft to activate your Windows XP after a re-install, they could say - "oh, we don't support that old XP anymore, goodbye..." and you'd have to spend $$$$s on Vista. In other words, if Microsoft decide to cut you off by refusing to activate your Windows XP, there isn't much you can do about it (well there is, but I can't say on here!).

Newer computers automatically have it installed...
Microsoft claims its a big improvement over previous windows versions... In my opinion, all the versions are basically the same.
Wait awhile longer.. and the craze wil shift to windows vista.

It come preinstalled on most PC's and by default is configured and ready to be infected with Viruses, trojans and spyware (WGA).
Also if you don't want any of the above then you have to pay for software to get rid of it!

Probably the fact that its usually the operating system required to use most software. I wouldn't bet on WinXP's chances if more developers supported other systems by default.
