Excommunication doesn't mean you're no longer Catholic. It just means you're no longer able to enjoy the benefits of being Catholic ... until whatever offense that got you excommunicated has been properly dealt with.
The purpose of excommunication is fraternal correction and repentance.
It doesn't always work out that way, though.
But it's not easy to get excommunicated, either.
Catholic politicians who contiunue to support abortion "rights" know this better than anyone.

No-one gets "kicked out" of the Church. Certain acts which are completely contrary to the truth and particularly heinous in the eyes of God constitute separation from the Body of Christ, de facto. The person excommuncates himself by committing such an act, even if no-one else knows about it. In some cases, where the sinner is a prominent public figure whose notoriety may mislead other Christians, the Church may publicly pronouce the person excommunicated, but again it is the act that actually excommunicated the person who committed it, and that person is excommunicated regardless of whether the Church makes any formal statement about it or not.

Abortion, assisting someone in getting an abortion, joining the Mason's Guild
Basically just read Catholicism for Dummies. It's a very informative book.
EDIT: You don't get 'kicked out' you are unable to partake in any of the sacraments, and can't work for a for any Catholic organization.
And the Catholic Church does not 'allow' such people to get in. They infiltrate the church the same way they do any other religion, organization, or company. Many teachers, rabbis, ministers, policemen, firemen, social workers, etc. have been and sadly are child molesters/rapists.

There are a few offenses for which Latin Rite Roman Catholics are automatically excommunicated (the Latin term is Latæ Sententiæ):
Apostasy (canon 1364),
Heresy (canon 1364),
Schism (canon 1364),
Desecration of the Eucharist (canon 1367),
Physical force against the Pope (canon 1370),
Attempted sacramental absolution of a partner in adultery (canon 1378),
Ordination of a bishop without a Papal mandate (canon 1382),
Direct violation of the sacramental seal of confession by a priest or bishop (canon 1388),
Procurement of a completed abortion or having an abortion done on oneself (canon 1398), or
Accomplice in any of the above (canon 1329).

Not tithing regularly.
Edit - Why on earth am I getting thumbs down?? We had to pay to catch Grandma's tithes up to date to get a priest to come to her house for last rites. This is just the truth. Was this a crooked priest? Or is this normal?
Edit - I have been told this is incorrect, that someone took advantage of us WITHOUT church approval. I'm sad I've had this view for 4 years because of a few bad apples.

Revealing the names of catholic priests who molested kids will get you "thrown out of heaven".
Pope Nazinger made it a rule earlier this year.
