There are many good answers to your question already, but to summarise, it could be that the litter tray is not in a good place i.e. either too much traffic for privacy or too near the food station, or it may be scared or bullied, or the whole thing could be a one-off accident.
Please do not give up and rehome unless this becomes a serious regular problem. Please do not punish the cat or put it outdoors, there is some reason, however obscure and don't listen to silly remarks about it hating you.
Please try some of the suggestions already made, but if you don't seem to get anywhere, it might be an idea to get a book out of the library on cat behaviour.
Alternatively, if you contact The Feline Advisory Bureau at www.fabcats.org, they may have some suggestions and even some literature on this kind of subject. They are a charity.
In the meantime, in order to clean up the mess and make sure that the cat doesn't think that one of these fouled places is a permanent toilet, get the worst off (ugh) and wash the places with a solution of water and BIOLOGICAL washing powder. Do not use bleach or disinfectant as apparently, this makes the odour stronger due to chemical reaction. We can't smell it, but they can.
Good luck, I,m sure it is loveable really!
P.S. Sometimes, the cats don't like the litter being used in like: "does she really expect me to sit on that!" Recycled tree fibre is a favourite with my two, but heck, everyone is different!

how old is your cat? if it is a kitten it may not be quite done when it leaves the litter tray it could have some poo on its bum so if it sits it smears. If it a cat this may still be happening but it could be because of an underlaying bowel problem.
If it is just on the walls behind your litter tray then your cat has prolly just put its paw in poo while it is covering its mess, to this I would suggested buying a covered cat litter box (local pet store will have this).
odd problem, would also like to know why your cat does this.

are you sure that the cat is doing this?
In 30 years a cat keeper with presently 12 cats but up to 25, I have NEVER seen this sort of thing. How does it manage to smear it? With it's paws or what?
What wormer did you give it?

If she has been introduced into a family with cats, she is very unhappy and can't find her own space within the family. If she is a first time pet, she needs some attention and training into what is her litter space. To get rid of the mess she has already made, use washing powder as it kills the smell. Cats dont always mix easily as I have found out myslef. Sorry to say it but sometimes the kindest thing is to rehome them if they can't settle.

It sounds like her poop is too soft if she can smear it all around. A lot of cats do not like covered litterboxes. She should have two boxes available to her in the house.
Sounds like you need to reconsider your litterbox type and placement. She will use it appropriately and it must be a type and be in a place that is cat friendly, not human convenient or esthetically pleasing.

I would make it an outdoor cat!
Seriously, put the litter tray out by the back door and kick it out when it goes looking for it. It should stop it re-decorating your house, and if not then at least the mess will be outside.

It may be from being recently de-wormed. Is it a long haired cat? It may have poop stuck on it's rear end or tail, I had along haired cat that I used to have to cut the hair on his tail and back legs so he wouldn't give me any presents.

did your cat have worms? then maybe it's trying to poop out worms. you should sanitize your cat's poop smears. she's having poopoo problems cuz of the reaction to the medication. give her lots of water so it won't dehydrate.
okee good luck
