One popular belief is that if a child plays a video game, they will emulate what they see and possibly harm or kill one of their peers. Unfortunately in court cases parents say they are not to blame, and that the video games made their child do it.
If a parent steps in and talks to the child about the game, they will understand more. They have the power to step in, and know what games are good and bad for their child. To me this makes sense, as I was raised playing games like Doom and Wolfenstein and my parents explained to me the different between the games and real life.
I would like to know if parents should be held responsible for their child when it comes to playing video games, and not the video game itself?

Yes parents should be held responsible because parents ARE responsible for their children. If a parent doesn't want their children to emulate what they see not only on video games but televisions, movies they have the option of NOT purchasing the games, or videos and turing the television OFF.

Inherently, the child is usually too young to understand the meaning of a game so it definitely should be put on the parents to be responsible for what video games their children are playing.

Should a parent be responsible if their child looks at pornography? Or responsible if their child runs out into a busy street? How about being responsible for what they eat? Hey, this world is full of wonderful things, and also horrible things, and even kind of icky things. As a parent also I'm careful about what either of my children are involved in. In fact I like playing with my children too when it comes to video games. I'll never allow them to play or watch something like Grand Theft Auto or any other unhealthy/unmoral games. The video game itself is not responsible at all for what we let our children get into. At least I'll be realistic, and careful for what my children see or do. Its important to guide them.

ABSOLUTELY.
The parent provided the access to the game, therefore the parent is responsible.
A game is not a living thing, therefore it is not responsible for the actions of the user. Parents are accountable for the actions of their children up to a certain age--then the child is accountable for his/her own actions.
This ranks up there with a parent trying to say "It's the gun's fault that Little Joey shot those people".

Of course parents are responsible for anything their child watches or plays especially if they are young. Video games are quite violent and useless in my opinion. I wouldn't let my children play them at all. I am strict when it comes to that stuff and believe that kids need to be out kicking a ball, playing with friends or creating something with their own imagination. Video games contribute to laziness, lack of concentration, aggressive behavior, obesity and impares social interaction. I know this because I work with children and see the effects.

The parent provided the game and did not provide guidance on what is and is not acceptable real life behavior. The parent is responsible.
