The cost of the dog depends on the breeder, the seller, whether it's registered or not, how many "middlemen" there are in the selling process, the age of the dog, the temperament of the dog... Smaller dogs do not necessarily cost more or less than larger ones.

If you want a good "deal" on a dog, get one from your local pound, shelter or rescue group. Dogs that come through such places are usually temperament tested, vet checked, wormed, microchipped, vaccinated and spayed/neutered before you bring them home (at a fraction of what it would cost you to do that yourself)

To find a dog close to you, go to any of these websites:

petfinder.com
1-800-save-a-pet.com
pets911.com
nextdaypets.com

These sites usually let you search for dogs by your city name and zip code.

Adopting a dog gives a homeless pet a home... and also helps to cut down on pups purchased through unscrupulous breeders and puppy mills.

It all depends on where you live and what kind of small dog you want. I have two pure miniature pinschers and one was $750 and the other was $350. The first one I got while I was stationed in Arkansas and the other was in North Phoenix. Both were from the breeders themselves. I would never go through the pet shops. I have seen min pins that have similar pedigrees of my dogs and they are well over a thousand dollars. I have not bought from breeders for years now because I realize just how many dogs need rescuing. Consider that option first, you would make a sad puppy very happy.

Dog prices fluctuate according to the market, like anything else. Generally speaking, a yorkie or maltese from a good breeder will cost around 1,000. If you buy from a petstore (which you shouldn't) you can pay 2,000 or more for a toy dog.

Generally, larger breeds sell for between 500-800 from breeders.

I paid $1000. for my yorkie, the breeder was asking $1200. I think, in general, little dogs do cost more. Maybe because smaller dogs don't produce large litters, or maybe it's because they are trendy, maybe a little bit of both, I really don't know. I think yorkies are one of the higher priced small dogs. They are in my area, anyways.

from what I have seen, those types of dogs are over $1000 each. I have personally known people to purchase them for about $1500.
