Every artist wants an audience...similarly every writes wants readers.
1) In India, there may be more English literate than in the UK but the vernacular languages have more audience than a foreign language.
2) Its always true that the expression in Mother-tounge is much more versatile than a foreign language.
3) English is seen more a "language for Earning".....so the literature interest is lesser.
Inspite of the above there are many eminent writers.

There is no easy way to explain this, but I hope this helps. India is both - a punya bhoomi & a karma bhoomi. A punya bhoomi because of its varied heritage , cultural diversity & tolerance. You will not find so many religions, languages etc. co- existing in harmony anywhere else. India is also the land of great people like Vivekananda & Gandhiji. Karma bhoomi is a land where you discharge your duties. Hence, people doing their rightful duties in India, can call her their Karma bhoomi.

Our Indian languages have rich literature, in which most Indian writers prefer to write. Even in English there are several successful authors other than these names mentioned by you .
