Well actually no you don't "have to" find out know, You want to find out. your brother would have been informed of why at the time he was transfered there. It would have been for violaton of some prison rule.
And most likley they will not tell you anyway, since they have no obligtation to tell a family member about in prison dispiline and may be restrected from doing so by the right to privacy act.
The main phone number of the prison should be answered 24 hours a day , every day. And there is always a duty officer or Officer incharge who is there.

The prison isn't compelled to inform you of the reason your brother has been put in the segregation block.
Generally prisoners have committed an offence against prison rules to end up in the Seg Unit. If I were you I would leave well alone for now. Your brother will know why he's there and I'm sure when he is released back onto his wing he will let you know on your next VO.

The prison may not be able to tell you anyway. People phone up prisons, the probation service, hospitals, etc every day fishing for information about people and therefore such public sector bodies tend to operate strict confidentiality policies. This means if someone rings up wanting information about a prisoner/offender/patient, staff are trained not to give any information out, even if the caller says, "but I'm his sister/mum/best friend".

You can call the prison he is in direct but don't count on getting any information. For one, he is entitled to his privacy and protection. Secondly, no matter who you say you are on the phone, you will not be believed. We having people calling our prison at all times for questions concerning everything for them being placed in to the locked unit to a death in the family. Everything is always double checked twice, has to be proved, etc. Your best bet is to visit him or hope for a letter waiting on him to explain. Sorry, but prisons have to very careful not only about protecting the population from prisoners but also the prisoners from the population.
