on the left side

I've done professional serving, and I was taught serve from the left. But sometimes at an event (actually most of the time) people aren't caring about the food and are leaning to one side talking and such. I threw the rules out the window and served wherever I could get the plate in without having it knocked over by drunk revelers. Nobody noticed, as long as they got their food hot and on time. And I got so tired of saying excuse me, pardon me constantly.

serve from the left pick up from the right.
Beverages are delivered from the right as well as sauces and condiments.
For example if you have a salad with the drssing on the side: you will serve the salad from the left side and drop the dressing from the right

Depends on what you are serving. Most items are served from the left, but some items like soup, are served from the right.

Serve from the left, take away from the right. Don't know why that's just what "they" say is proper.
