If you go to windows update it will block the download, as they've protected themselves against invalid product keys, however if you enable automatic downloads, it will allow you to install SP2 and all security downloads as they become available.

There is also a handy piece of software called AutoPatcher that includes all published updates for Win XP, and lets you install the relevant ones. The website for it is hard to navigate, but its all there.

very difficult, its a case of lucky dip.some copied versions of windows xp will accept service pack 2 were some wont
you just have to download the service pack 2 file from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx,and after downloading it try installing it
it will run a inventory during set up and this is when some copys are detected and set up is canncelled, but some seem to work,no one knows why this happens,it just does
if this fails the only way to get service pack 2 is to buy a genuine copy of xp,but why not save a few quid and buy on-line and buy a o.e.m copy, these are copys designed for p.c builders but are nearlly similar to the upgrades, all you do with these is boot from cd instead of installing from the desktop
you can buy a cheap copy from http://www.misco.co.uk/productinformation/~Q75714~WW~/MICROSOFT%20OEM%20Microsoft%20Windows%20XP%20Home%20Edition%20Ed.htm,this is the lowest priced windows xp home sp2 i have found on the web...good bargain
good luck

You should be able to down load the service pack from the microsoft website. (Not the automatic update version) However Microsoft now validate everything which means they will check the validity of your software. This may not apply to the initial install.

I recommend buying a legal version.
