My understanding is that Gentamicin is a Sulfa pass product. Is that true. What should I do? I am also diabetic on insulin. I know that any Sulfa will kill me!

Yes, that is a sulfite based medication. It could be that he wasn't paying enough attention to detail and he perscribed it on accident. Call him straight away and tell him his mistake. Doctors are sometimes in too much of a rush to read all the forms you fill out stating clearly "ALLERGIC TO SULFA".

Kudos to you for researching your meds before you take them!

Gentamysin is an aminoglycoside. This is a different class of drugs than the sulfonamides (sulfa drugs). Its molecular formula is:

C21H43N5O7 -- No sulphur

You can read what I provided if you want, but the easiest thing is ask your doctor when the prescription is written and your pharmacist when it is filled, "Is this OK if I'm allergic to sulfa?"

Ask your pharmacist.....and btw I am allergic as well, when I was young I got staff infection from a cut, sulfa was the cure, but since I could not take it......the doctor told me to soak the cut in Tide, make a paste with the powder and put directly on the infection....it works!

no, Gentamycin is not a sulfa based drug. I too am severly allergic to sulfa, and I take Gentamycin without difficulty.
It is in the "mycin" family of antibiotics.
