The further northwest you live, the safer it is. It's sad but true that the city has marginalized the east side to the point where our perceptions of violence have become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I would never live in the northeast (just hear any local talk about Forest Lawn!) but I would be happy to live in the northwest. If I didn't mind commuting I would also consider one of the "New Communities" down in the southwest. If I could choose anywhere to live, it would be the Kensington / Sunnyside / Hillhurst area.

I would assume it's safer than other big Canadian cities like Toronto or Montreal. Toronto has bad gun crimes, and I read London, Ontario had 14 homocides last year.

Besides, there all rich in oil in Calgary, they got no time to go killing people lol.

I don't know what the numbers are, but I lived in Calgary for 15 years, and I can tell you that it is a safe place to raise a family. It is very clean, lots of green spaces, great parks, you can go biking, sailing, hiking, fishing, skiing in Kananaskis Country on your doorstep .. Lots of great places to shop, lots of organized sports and infrastructures for kids. Go to Calgary, you will love it !
