I think it's an extremely rude question--one I would never ask anyone else but for some reason people have asked me more than once.
I'm in Social work, and I think thats why people ask me--because they know Social work doesn't pay all that great.
Of course, I knew this getting into it and I obviously did not get into it for the money.
I was wondering how other people feel about this. Also, what would be a good thing to say when and if it happens again?

I think it is rude and if they want to know the amount for the reason you stated then they can look online at a job site (like monster) or they can call a place that employees that type of person. I would tell them to do that and that is quite personal and that you would not ask them that question.

That is a rude and intrusive question! Here are some possible responses:
"I'm not answering that question."
"I make enough to pay the bills."
"How much do you make?"
"I didn't choose the job for the pay."
"That's more information than I like to give out. Why do you ask?"
"It's not about the money. It's about the kids."
Good Luck!

Best advice I ever got was to do one of two things: Either ask them "Why do you ask that?" or look at them without saying a word. After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, they will either get the hint or not. If not, smile and change the subject.

I've had co-workers ask me that question and I give them all different answers. To some I'll give them a high dollar figure and others I give a very low dollar figure. People outside of work, I tell them...I'm not rich, but I'm not starving. People like to make sure that your not making more than them....I give them all something to think about.

When I am asked that question I respond with a "Why do you ask?"

Then you can usually not give a direct answer and divert any other rude questions.

If that doesn't work simply tell them that is not something you discuss with others.

Yeah I know... it's a dumb question to ask. In my opinion it's extremely rude. Just say that you're not in it for the money and leave it at that.

ASK them Why they need to know... then laugh it off by saying you have sooooooo much extra money from this job that you started stuffing pillows with it !!

There's one sure-fire response that stops the "nosy nellies" in their tracks every time...."Why do you ask?" Very rarely do they respond. If they do, I merely say, "Hmmm. Interesting." and walk away. Works in any situation, I guarantee it! LOL

Just politely say that it is none of their business...or you can make a joke about it...or change the subject
